I think that when we photograph the same model over a long period of time it can be interesting how the images develop. There's no doubt in my mind that there's a learning curve to get the best out of any model, and there are plenty of examples of photographers who do just that. Portraiture strives to bring out something of the inner personality of the subject, it's more than just getting a "good likeness", it's about the whole person.
