There are some p[laces it's well worth returning to time and again, and Muncaster Castle, near Ravenglass, is one of them. The last time we went it was an ADAPS private booking, so we had access to shooting images inside the hall. That was fantastic, but this time we were just visiting and had to make do with exterior shots.
The owls have always been a major attraction - what's not to like about owls? The current World owl Trust are moving out soon, and Muncaster are going to do it themselves it seems. But for now things are as they were, albeit it in process of moving out.
This is a European Eagle Owl.
There are plenty of wild birds around, and of course the ubiquitous robin:
The landscapes around Muncaster are dramatic enough, affording some great open vistas.
But the castle itself is superb, not to be missed. It is reputed to be haunted, so for the brave you can book an overnight in one of the rooms to see if you can catch sight of a ghost. Here's the castle from the outside:
The bonus this time was the appearance of lots of herons in the trees, around 4pm they get fed so they start to gather a little earlier than that.
Fantastic, a really great day and we'll definitely be back again in the future.
