Music or not?

8 Aug 2020 12:43AM   Views : 453 Unique : 323

I was watching a slide show of winning images on Thursday and turned off the sound. The reason was that the MP4 movie that contained the pictures also contained a music track. Given that images evoke responses and work on many levels to do so, my rationale was that music also creates an emotional reaction. We therefore would end up with two clashing artistic and emotional messages. So silence it was, and the pictures could then breathe and speak for themselves.

There are plenty of reasons to also include music, and we routinely do when producing slide shows with Pictures2Exe, but in this case the images would have a coherent message. Music might then be appropriate and actually enhance the message. One of the most powerful AVs I have seen was a friend's grainy black and white interpretation of his visit to Auschwitz, complete with apprpriate music. This was coherent, although thoroughly chilling as well. After that we had a period of silence before we felt it was appropriate to continue.

Needless to say I have never been one of those people who can revise or write whilst listening to music - I get absorbed into the task and need quiet to do so. Today's images are unrelated to anything apart from having some content that indicates music.

The Pentax and the Butterfly

I always carry my trusty Pentax MX-1, probably the best compact camera that I have ever used. It is staggeringly useful in terms of functions, not too large or heavy and sturdily made. It also has a great lens, the SMC Pentax 8-25mm f/1.8-2.5, comple...

Historic Tyldesley - Frank's Cafe and More!

There was a cafe in this building for many years, well loved by local people and run by Frank and his wife. Eventually, of course, Frank retired and the building has been under restoration for some time now. If you look on YouTube one of the urban ex...

Historic Tyldesley - The Technical College

There is a road sign that says "Welcome to Historic Tyldesley" or something similar, and for a while we scratched our heads wondering what excatly was historic about Tyldesley. Well, slap on the hand for us, because there are plenty of things that w...

Buile Hill Greenhouse - Progress Report

We were down at Buile Hill Park in Salford today, just to see how the mansion and the Greenhouse were getting along. The mansion is under restoration at the moment, but the greenhouse was set to be demolished. This was such a wonderful place, with bi...

I make a point of always carrying a camera, just to capture anything and everything that catches my eye as we carry on with the minutiae of life. I was in Atherton and just heading for the shop that sells fuses and passed a small alleyway that used t...

Ah! The muzak?
So many productions are made insufferable for me.
I have tinnitus, high pitched sounds feel like they make my eardrums vibrate.
I try turning the sound down to a point where the muzak is barely discernable but invariably the 'background' sound is louder that the main dialogue, so I get no nothing at all?
I go somewhere else!!!
I really can't understand why producers include either inappropriate music or so loud the dialogue can't be heard, to the point IMHO where they ruin all their good work?
