Over The Sea To............

We all need to dream and sometimes I might just like to immerse myself in a book that has absolutely no practical use to me at all. It cost me 25 in 1997 when we were visitng Oban. I debated long and hard but in the end bought "The Scottish Islands" - a comprehensive guide to every Scottish island by Hamish Haswell-Smith (Canongate, 266mm x 202mm, 424pp, ISBN 0 86241 579 9) - it is available in a revised edition at 40 but Amazon are asking 28.33 when I checked just now.

Every Scottish island is covered, with a nice map, anchorage points, population history, owner details, geology, history, wildlife and a summary. It's a gorgeous book, full of hours of browsing and dreaming. Dreaming because there is something intrinsically romantic about the Scottish islands, of no practical use because we are never going to explore any of these places by boat. Yes, we love Skye and Mull is also on the list of Things to Do, but not all these tiny rocks in the wild sea. They beckon, but only from an armchair.
An example map is this delightfully drawn detailed plan of the Isle of May, which can be seen from Crail and similar places in The Kingdom of Fife.

Here's a picture of part of the family enjoyingh being with friends in Crail, albeit it in 1937. Slightly before my time.....
