Places - Arley Hall and Gardens

Anyone who reads my lens reviews will be familiar with Arley Hall as it is one of my "go to" places for the sample shots. It has everything - architecture, landscape, flowers and plants, bokeh shots, flare and CA shots....and it's also a challenge to try and find new things amongst the familiar. There's always a danger that if we walk around the same direction, look at the same things from the same angles and just fall into a routine that we simply shoot the same subjects in the same way every time. But who hasn't been on a long walk, and then realised that if we stop and turn around the world suddenly takes on a brand new look? So, yes, some shots remain usefully the same, but some new angles are always good. Apart from anything elses, sometimes we keep looking at things and not seeing them, until suddenly we do see them for the first time. It's useful to see Sue's pictures as well, and sometimes I stop and ask "Where did you see that?" because I was stood there as well but didn't.

So, in Lockdown as we are, we miss our trips to Arley Hall and here's a reminder. If you like it a whole bunch then more views are also available in episodes of Peaky Blinders!

Round and Round the Harbour

Perhaps no trip to Cardiff would be complete without a gentle tour of the harbour by boat. Starting close to the shrine lamenting the death of Ianto Jones, the character from Torchwood, the open air boat took us on a clockwise journey, and this is wh...

Cardiff, Centre of the Universe

Still on the theme of Doctor Who, Cardiff looks very much like it is indeed the centre of the universe. Temporal Rifts, Torchwood, Aliens of every description, these are to be seen on the streets of Cardiff. In 2017 Me, Sue, her late brother Mark and...

So, we meet again, Doc-tor....

There I am, an unsuspecting 12-year-old, waiting for a new Saturday evening serial about an old man who travels in time. Twenty-five minutes later, there I am totally wowed by the most exciting bit of new TV I had ever seen. Yes, the first episode of...

The Amazing Dalbeattie Museum Trust

This is a small but packed museum in Dalbeattie, Dumfries and Galloway. It covers a couple of floors in a corner shop location and is packed with artefacts, the bad news for us being that many of them are things that we have owned or used as youngste...

Golden Slumbers

There's an exhibitions of Egypt's Golden Mummies at Manchester Museum, and we went down to see it this afternoon. I travelled very light this time, in the end using just the Pentax MX-1 compact camera. The conditions were very dark and the exhibits l...
