Tonight we decided to drive over to Pennington Flash and see if there was a decent sunset. I took the Canon SX40HS 12MP bridge camera and the Pentax X90 bridge camera. The idea was that I would start my "head to head" comparison of the two. In the event, the Pentax struggled with the low light and I soon gave up on it. It's a very sharp lens, but not when it won't lock focus, either because of the colour of the light or because of the low light. Either way, it was over to the Canon. This would lock on, but in terms of handling trying to shoot birds was a nightmare, very difficult as the camera is too slow and there are too many sensitive buttons that can be caught accidentally with unpredicatble effects. However, it is possible and in the end I was actually very pleased with the quality of the results. The only thing is that with a DSLR I would have been more confident that a much higher percentage of shots would be usable.
Here's a selction of the succesful images, and I am particularly pleased with the first image of the swan. I also like the colour balance of the shots, which retain the richness of the late evening light.
