The ADAPS Year Book 2014-2015

Another year, and another marathon book making. Every year I badger the members of the Atherton & District Amateur Photographic Society (ADAPS) to give me three of their best pictures, from which I choose two to put in the yearbook. The idea is to keep an ongoing record over the years of who the members were, and what sort of photography they did. This is the Seventh volume and the book gets bigger every time.

It's a pretty intense process and it takes me a couple of days to make, using the Blurb Booksmart software. I optimise each image selected before they go into the book, hoping that this will give some consistency from page to page. It is possible to buy the book, but there's no profit in it, so there's no pressure to do so. It's all about presenting what the members do. I buy a copy every year, the club has one as well and a reasonable number of members also buy one.

When I finished the main work earlier today, I felt just out of synch with the real world. That computer is all very well, but it's possible to get very absorbed. Still, it's done now, and I'm rather pleased with the cover. The image is by Neil Higham and I selected it about a year ago when I spotted it. Here's the cover of the book:

The Pentax and the Butterfly

I always carry my trusty Pentax MX-1, probably the best compact camera that I have ever used. It is staggeringly useful in terms of functions, not too large or heavy and sturdily made. It also has a great lens, the SMC Pentax 8-25mm f/1.8-2.5, comple...

Historic Tyldesley - Frank's Cafe and More!

There was a cafe in this building for many years, well loved by local people and run by Frank and his wife. Eventually, of course, Frank retired and the building has been under restoration for some time now. If you look on YouTube one of the urban ex...

Historic Tyldesley - The Technical College

There is a road sign that says "Welcome to Historic Tyldesley" or something similar, and for a while we scratched our heads wondering what excatly was historic about Tyldesley. Well, slap on the hand for us, because there are plenty of things that w...

Buile Hill Greenhouse - Progress Report

We were down at Buile Hill Park in Salford today, just to see how the mansion and the Greenhouse were getting along. The mansion is under restoration at the moment, but the greenhouse was set to be demolished. This was such a wonderful place, with bi...

Always Carry a Camera

I make a point of always carrying a camera, just to capture anything and everything that catches my eye as we carry on with the minutiae of life. I was in Atherton and just heading for the shop that sells fuses and passed a small alleyway that used t...

What a brilliant idea Smile

Do the submitted pictures for the book have to have been entered into club competitions during the year or is it just really a reflection of the members' own interests / style ?

And I bet there is some " friendly encouragement " from the members to have their image on the front cover Wink

The pictures are whatever the members want to submit. They give me three images and they have two in the book. This year we did some featured members, who had a short article and then five pictures to show their work in a bit more detail.

As for the cover, I choose that and I chose this year's when I saw this image about a year ago. Nothing else came in that suited better. Covers have to have space for text as well as being arresting images so there are usually some obvious contenders.
