The Empty Corridors of Education

We visited Mesnes Park in Wigan today, and that is worth a blog in itself, but soon, not today. Today, arriving at the top end of the park, we saw the derelict, abandoned mill building that was once the place where our son Mike attended as a sixth form student. Then, it was shining glass, polished wood reception, fitted carpets and the bustle of hundreds of students pounding those corridors and stairwells. At some point I recall coming out of the building and walking down the stairs that led into Mesnes Park, but not proceeding any further than that. Now, we stand on those stairs looking upwards, and see the shell of the building, without the shining glass, without the polished wood and without the ceaseless noise of the sudents. Quite a sad sight really, especially as this change has taken only just over 20 years.

First, the view from part way up the stairs:

Then, the view when we arrive at the barrier that surrounds the building:

We are getting used to our own pasts being gradually erased by progress, but it's an awesome thought that the next generation's past is already on its way out as well...
