There are some places that hold a certain magic and it's truly wonderful to stumble unexpectedly on one of these rare treasures. But such is the nature of Balgonie castle in the Kingdom of Fife. We stumbled across this remote place and found ourselves in the capable hands of the Laird of Balgonie himself, as he guided us around the castle he so clearly loves. A man who works with his hands, the laird has made much of the woodwork himself as he restores the castle as much as can be afforded. He has made furntiture, doors and these have been crafted superbly to be as authentic as possible.
More recently, a couple of episodes of Outlander have been filmed at Balgonie, and it's easy to see why. If you get the chance, do call in and take the Laird's personal guided tour, and come away with a richer feeling for the history and intimate grandeur of the building.
We were using Pentax K-1 and K-3 cameras, and I was shooting up to ISO 204,800 in some of the darker areas. This was a really fascinating and unexpected treasure.
