I have been photographing the Astley Green Colliery Museum (Lancashire Mining Museum) for years and now it is well down the path of making itself more visitor friendly. A passenger train is being introduced, the site is being tidied and Health and Safety have clearly arrived. They have gained a secure future for the museum and I hope that means I can continue to photograph there for many years yet. We have gained safety and new exhibits, but we have lost the rough and ready site that was covered in disused machinery and vehicles. It was a playground for enthusiasts, but it couldn't last like that for ever.
My images today show some of what it was, the delightful exhibits everywhere, strewn all around the site.
But don't get me wrong, the new style museum is still a valuable location well worth getting to know, we might just regret the loss of the ability to explore and crawl all over the exhibits without fences, barriers or any obstruction to doing so. Funnily enough, nobody got hurt with all that freedom.
