Year of the Horse

So I was sat in the café at Marks and Spencer and discussing the paper lanterns all over Manchester. "It's the Chinese New Year," said the woman at the next table. "I don't know what year it is though." One minute later, the iPhone revealed that 2014 is the Year of the Horse. Yay for iPhones! Smile

This is what the lanterns looked like in St Ann's Square:

Even better back-lit I think:

Just off St Ann's Square is Barton Arcade, well worth a look for its splendid Victorian architecture:

I makes a great HDR shot, so take a tripod! I only had time for one straight shot today.

Another tip is go to the top floor of Waterstones. Browse the photography books and try the splendid café there for a morning bacon butty and coffee or tea! Now you know another of my little vices.....the morning breakfast offer. Wink

So, we meet again, Doc-tor....

There I am, an unsuspecting 12-year-old, waiting for a new Saturday evening serial about an old man who travels in time. Twenty-five minutes later, there I am totally wowed by the most exciting bit of new TV I had ever seen. Yes, the first episode of...

The Amazing Dalbeattie Museum Trust

This is a small but packed museum in Dalbeattie, Dumfries and Galloway. It covers a couple of floors in a corner shop location and is packed with artefacts, the bad news for us being that many of them are things that we have owned or used as youngste...

Golden Slumbers

There's an exhibitions of Egypt's Golden Mummies at Manchester Museum, and we went down to see it this afternoon. I travelled very light this time, in the end using just the Pentax MX-1 compact camera. The conditions were very dark and the exhibits l...
