While looking through images to select for the blogs I came across a large number of group portraits. Groups can be very tricky, not least because there's always one who is pulling a funny face , looking the other way or generally messing up the group harmony. So what can we do? Well, talking to the group is a good start and capturing their attention. Some might ring a bell, some might say something contentious, but anything that will rivet them all on the camera. Once, just once, a group actually gave me a round of applause when the shot was made, which as it was in a wedding during the ceremony by arrangement took me a bit by surprise. I think we all forgot it was a wedding for a moment.
Anyway, groups, lots of them, so I'm going to look now for some and we can see together what we can find.

There's a few group photos there and plenty more of the same in my archive. Groups are another area of photography where we have to be confident and take control, or rely on candid situations which carry fewer guarantees.
