We had an eccentric Aunt who would melt in costume jewelry--sort of-- Well for Christmas she would give us ( the children) jewelry boxes complete with the cotton square and filled with pennies---wrapped in news paper and tied with old string---- That many years ago the $2.00 was a treasure--- now it is the memory that brings a laugh and a smile every time--

As a kid you certainly knew when you had a bob or twos worth of those in your trouser pocket, falling into the canal would not have been good!!!
If you look at the dates on some, think of the history that the hands that held those coins have lived through.
