Swinton 1972 Vintage

By johnriley1uk
This is one of my Kodachrome slides and I've chosen it as a slice of life from a time gone by. It is 1972 and is the crossroads just by the Lancastrian Hall and Library in Swinton, near Manchester. What i like about this sort of shot is the simple, ordinariness of the scene. People and cars come and go and we take a random moment. Its vintage is revealed by the sparse traffic (today it would be full of cars were it not for Lockdown) but on closer inspection these are models long gone. The people are just there, going about their daily tasks. This scene as it stands will never happen again.

So very true John. I wonder what these people are doing at this moment. And how many are even still alive.
A well produced from slides image.

You can occasionally see those vehicles today but people dressed smartly (especially the men in jacket, collar, and tie) is really dating this scene. Lovely capture of how things used to be, John.

Wow! Great nostalgic photo!

That dark mauve car on the far side by the park looks like a Renault 16. My dad had one, his pride and joy.

I was 17 and allowed to use it before I eventually got my first car.

It had a bench front seat, steering wheel gear stick, and was like driving a boat down the high street.

Happy memories

A good cross-section of town life with the cars and people going about their normal day. A good quality scan from Kodachrome. I always find a bit hit or miss plus usually a cyan or magenta bias and yet some can scan perfectly.
