Sipping Nectar

By jon1169
Resubmission of my first butterfly shot, straight from the camera, unsharpened and minimum compression. Cabbage white on lavendar flowers. First time I've tried taking butterflies so I'm quite pleased with the composition and focus.

Thanks George. For a "cheap" camera the S602 really does have a nice macro mode.

ohhhh....Gonna have to get on me soapbox here...grrr...sorry, but there is no such thing as a "Cabbage White"...It's a local colloqualism(scuse spelling there). Think I'd be more inclined to say that it is a Wood White! Sorry, I'm a stickler for detail...lol, please don't take offence...Cracking good shot all the same....Regards....Ade....Click

Not bad at all for a first attempt Jon, well detailed and good composition.

Looks more like a small white to me as the wood white does not have the dark spot on the wing. Commonly known as the cabbage white due to the larvae feeding on cabbage and related Cruciferae.

Regards
Terry.

You should be very pleased if this is your first time taking butterflies! Very nice side lighting and good DOF in the right place. Click!

Ade, Terry - thanks for putting me right on the correct name for the butterfly - you learn something new every day!

John, Chris - thanks for the comments. It took half an hour and numerous shots sitting by my lavendar bush to get one good image. Thank God for digital as I would have gone through about 3 films otherwise!

Careful Jon, you are on a slippery slope with this macro shooting - you don't want to end up like your father!

This is good, nicely detailed and you have the focus and exposure well under control.

Difficult - aren't they Smile

An absolutely cracking shot, butterflies are one of my favourite subjects...so sorry Hubby (Ade) it is a Small White, as Terry says, but not known as the 'Cabbage White', although they are a pest to them also, the Large White is the 'Cabbage White'....Enough of that, great shot...click...Sue

I can contribute nothing to the identification process. However, I can say that I think it's a great shot.

Thanks for all the comments everyone. I didn't realise I'd stir up so much debate by misnaming the butterfly! Smile

I'd like to spend more time trying butterfly shots, but we only seem to have 2 Small Whites (get the name right!) in the garden. I wonder if one is male and one female?
