I'm Going

By DeSilver
I have not been out with my camera for almost twelve months now. Firstly, my health which has not been too good of late and secondly this awful weather that we have had during the last twelve months. Sad Smile
Last Tuesday though I was tempted out by my very good friends Carsten http://www.ephotozine.com/user/focused-photography-16022 . And Joe http://www.ephotozine.com/user/photographerjoe-36665 . I had the good fortune to meet another excellent photographer from EPZ Jim http://www.ephotozine.com/user/jim5955-92528 who is a far better bird photographer than I could ever dream of being. Nice to meet you Jim. Anyway we went to a pool by the M6 near Cannock, Brewood pool I think and spent a couple of hours there. A couple of hours that I enjoyed so very much. During this time I managed to photograph quite a few Ducks and Coots and this wonderful Heron as it left the pool.

I do hope you like it as much as I do and if you do comment please be honest (I can take it)

Thanks once again Carsten, Joe and Jim. Smile

David.

Hey hey...good to see you uploading again, David GrinGrin

Glad you had a good time at that outing and I have to say you certainly had some great timing with this shot. I've never shot a bird in flight and this one looks like it's going at a fair pace!

I like the crop you've used too. Very good use of space Smile

Good capture of the heron. But...
I have the feeling, that you blured the bg on the computer. If so, there are a few edges you should go over again. All around the heron is kind of a "halo", at the feet and the wings it shows quite well.
Hope you enjoy the great weather,
Johanna

Nice shot. I like the movement produced by the background .. it seemed that nothing could stop it....if there was no fish in the pool. . Grin Looking forward to seeing your ducks next.

Well done Dave, in flight shots ain't easy, you could try upping the shutter speed next time (increase the ISO) and setting the lens at around 400mm or so because the Sigma is reputed to be a little soft at 500mm. Not sure what the marks are around the wing edges and feet but that's probably been caused during processing Wink
Geoff.
Nicely captured.

Set your autofocus mode to continuous, or whatever Sony call it. It will track the bird as you follow it, shutter half pressed, and only lock focus when the shutter is pressed fully.

Use shutter priority and get the speed higher for best chance of getting the Heron sharp, BUT the background will not be as blurred as it is here. If you are very good at panning, the slower speed as used, at 400mm would work with the continuous focus and give a nice blurred background like this.
