The Flying banana

By ColleenA
Good morning... Thank you to everyone of you for the tremendous support of my Leopard upload. ALSO A HUGE THANK YOU TO THE FOLLOWING PEOPLE ...Fred, Nigel, Graham, Kathryn, Brian (65) , Jean-Noel and Jenny (D) for their UA's, I was bowled over.

Today a SOUTHERN YELLOW BILLED HORNBILL (Tachus leucomelas) ..nicknamed The flying banana. They are a medium sized bird made famous by The Lion King where it is used as a character named Zazu.
They are omnivorous and are found where there is scrub and acacia woodland. They eat insects, bird chicks, frogs, chameleons, ants, termites ...the list goes on.
They are monogamous, in courtship the male feeds the female small bits of food for up to a month before mating. They then seek a suitable tree, make a nest with leaves and bark. When the nest is ready the female will enter the nest to lay her eggs. She then closes the hole with her faeces leaving a small slit in the entrance for her partner to feed her while she incubates her eggs.
There was a huge grass fire in the Kruger national park the afternoon I took this and had completely taken all the colour out of the sky.

This could well be an illustration in a nature book. The bird is well positioned with lots of space to look into and the detail is excellent.
What a beautiful looking bird, he looks like an old soul !!

Fantastic capture, and wonderful series, i hope you are going to be there for a little while
Also I think the washed out colour of the sky sets this off this bird perfectly..

This is a bit brilliant, possibly because there is no colour in the sky, all the focus is on the bird and because there is no colour in the sky there is no restriction to his gaze...................... It's a great composition Colleen, colour or no colour it stands out.
