Barkley's Gate

By julianevans
This gate, made famous by Joe Cornish, is on the Cleveland Way near Sutton Bank. He said that his composition was the only one he found that worked - I'd like to think that this one has it s merits too!

This was taken last August on a day of sunshine and showers involving a lot of waiting around. It was also extremely windy, so perhaps there's a bit too much movement in the grass to the left of the gate!

The title... comes from a fact that an eminent expert on all things Yorkshire - he knows who he is Wink - says that it was built by a man called Alf Barkley.

Indeed a lovely view. Beautiful sky too.
Can't help wondering why Alf Barkley forgot to put a fence while he was there though!

Great shot, Julian. I like the way you've managed this so that the gate is accommodated under the horizon line.

Julian, I was there just the other day, it's a wonderful place and you've done it proud. I love the high angle looking down on the gate, works really well. Martin.

I don't mind the blur of the grasses, it adds to the atmosphere of the image. A very strong take on a now classic viewpoint.
