Mid-day Sun, steam. shiny surfaces; not an easy shot to get.

Its turned out reasonably well. The appearance here suggests that making the darkest darks actually black will improve contrast and colour.

If you look at the levels adjustment in Photoshop, you can see the graph doest extend all the way left; just move that left slider in to meet the end of the graph to improve blacks.

Mod has this done.

Willie

Thanks folks. Coming from years of shooting on film, I don't often manipulate my photos but try to get the best shot with what's available. That's not to say I won't edit though...

Hello, David and welcome to the EPZ Critique Gallery.
I see that this is your first upload here. I hope you will enjoy it and find it a good place to learn. We try to give advice that will help people to improve their photography both the taking and the editing of images.

Remember that the more information you give us as regards your photographic aims and intentions, the better.
It also helps us if you respond to critique and indicate which ideas you found helpful. That means we can tailor advice according to your needs and abilities.

I've had a look at your website and have been admiring your artwork. You already obviously have a good eye for composition.
I like the way you have gone in for close detail here, and that your timing of the shot enabled you to capture the steam from the engine.
It's good to have the name included, too.

I feel there is little to critique on this image.
So I am being picky when I say that I'd like to have seen more of the engine and less of the ground inside the frame.
When going for detail like this, rather than taking a picture of the whole engine, you can almost treat it like an abstract. What I mean is that it isn't necessary to include context, like the rails and stony ground. Filling your frame with detail of the engine often looks good.
This is just a suggestion, and it wouldn't surprise me if you took some like that at the same time.

Pamela.
