Taken a couple of weeks ago on a local river, after setting up a perch and portable hide the night before.

Hi Justin,

This is one of the best bird shots I've seen on this site. You have obviously got pretty close to the bird to give that super background, which makes the bird really jump out of the pic. Did you use one of those portable hides that are on sale in the EP shop, or have you made your own set-up?

Paul

PS any chance of viewing a Hi-def version of this shot?

Thanks for your kind words.
I did indeed use a portable hide,it was the Jamie Woods Fensman model.I set it up around midnight the night prior to shooting and entered it at 5.30-6.00am the following morning, while it was still dark,so the bird wouldn't see me going in.
It was positioned approximately 8-8.5 feet from the perch.

That is a fantastic photo Justin, I have a spot near where i fish where I see K.Fishers (only flash by) How long do they sit on the perch? As they seem to be a very industrious bird.
justin c 18 5.2k 36 England
1 Jul 2007 7:22AM
Matt,
They will often investigate and use a new perch almost immediately after discovering one.
Once they find ideal perch they will often stay on it for several minutes at a time watching for fish below.
They'll tend to use the same perches on a very regular basis and are often active right from the crack of dawn untill dusk.
Hope this helps and thanks for your comment, much appreciated.
