I wish this wasnt MY arm, but it is.
It looked like a freckle that had gotten too big for its boots...but it wasnt THAT big....the size of an eraser on the end of a pencil maybe.

But for some reason it kept catching my attention. I went to my doctor who dismmissed it as a freckle. But something felt bad somewhere.I went back, and a locum was on duty. He would have made a poor poker player as he surveyed my 'freckle'.
A urgent dermatology referral revealed a 'malignant melanoma' the most deadly skin cancer there is.
I have been lucky enough to see my fair share of tropical sun, but used a high factor sunscreen without fail. The treatment was painful and debilitating but I am now clear of the cancer. I have a fifteen % chance of it recurring, and will be screened for the rest of my life.
Be careful out there guys.I didnt think it would happen to me either.

Im glad to hear your ok.

Its different to see a picture here with such a stoy and a powerfull one at that.

Your photo shows power and its very much"in your face" but the eye contact is subtle. I like that...

Thanks for putting this one up and for your story, hope it all is good for you and yours in the future..

So glad to hear you are ok! I makes me so cross that doctors can be so dismissive with our lives! Thank goodness you had a decent locum. Good luck.

Thanks for all your good wishes guys.Yeah, its been a dark time, but not without an element of objective facination. I took a fellow 'tog with me hoping they would let him document the op for your further intrigue..but they kicked him out on his ear .Damn.

Know what you are talking about, I went through the same thing with a 'freckle' on my shoulder about 5 years ago. I couldn't really understand as I always stay covered in the sun (I get burnt in fog). Clear ever since though apart from a small scare last year. Hope all remains well for you.

Well done - for not taking no for an answer and then for using it for such an eye catching and informative photo. Glad it has all turned out so well.

Love the fact you even wanted to document the op... a true photographer - everything can be a photo op!

Here's hoping your recovery continues, and the scar heals well. You're so young for something like this to happen to! Noseprints is right, you've got wonderful eyes!

Best Wishes,

Something I worry about too. I am covered in freckles, Aaargh, I don't know which ones to keep an eye on! I grew up in South Africa and got very badly sunburt on various occasions in my childhood, so I am realistic enough to know that I run a good risk. Any tips on what to look out for?

Oh gawd,I dont want to freak you out....but okay then. Mine was a freckle that kind of turned into a smudge, just a flat brown patch, but asymetretrical.Theres this ABCDE thing you can apply when examining yr moles A is 4 asymetry, B is for border, C for colour (any black or blue or pink or white or purple bits is dodgy) D is for diameter (shouldnt be bigger than a 1/4 square E is for evolution (has is changed? does it itch? bleed? crusty?) needless to say none of these should apply. most moles are harmless and any that arent usually start getting up and waving at you so dont worry- lifes to short!
