What a wonderful world

By Kali
Puja is 10 months old. She lives in the same slum village as Mangli. Her Mother Aarti showed where she had buried her last two babies - both died of chest infections.

Now Puja has a chest infection too.I took her to see the doctor who said hospital treatment was neccesary, but Aarti took fright at this as wouldn't hear of hear of it.Its difficult to understand why.

I paid the doctor to give Puja daily antibiotic injection, but he told me privately that the infection was too deep seated, and Puja is unlikely to pull through, its almost certainly complicated by the TB that Aarti also has, and the disease ridden environment of Charan (the slum where they live) couldn't be worse really.

Im trying to think of a positive note to end this story on, but there just isnt one...sorry.

Your shot captured her innocence, her suffering, her poverty. Thanks to your picture, Puja will live on in my memory, even though I don't have the privilege of knowing her. Yes, I admit I cried when I saw this picture and read Puja's story. Thank you for this meaningful image.

A heart-breaking photograph and a more heart-breaking story of Puja. I am sadden to think that Puja is condemed to have a grossly short life, just like her siblings. An incredible tradegy that is the significant feature of this photo.

My heart goes out to kids like this. Your humanity in helping is heart warming. I do hope she survives and lives a happy life, but somehow I don't think this will be the case. She looks so helpless.
