Gold Ringed

By KarenFB
We have several of these hunting in the woodland rides. They are wonderful to watch as they buzz around, but not very accommodating when it comes to taking photographs - I'm still searching for the perfect, clear background!

Like the details and tones in this. There is a white areas one of the leave under the body that would be better cloned out.
Well captured.

Beautiful macro shot. I agree that a less-fussy background would make for a better photograph but I don't think the background is a serious problem, here — it's sufficiently out of focus that it doesn't distract much at all and it's nice to see the fly in its environment, too. I'd say you should be delighted at getting one with a simpler background, but not at all disappointed with shots like this one!

Well taken, Karen. These are difficult to capture against any background & you've done well here with even, overall detail of the creature.

Hi Karen

This is very nice indeed! I always find this sort of shot incredibly difficult to do - always trying to decide what f stop is suitable for the subject, is the backround going to be too detailed... infact I faff about so much so that the subject has normally gotten bored and flown off by the time I have the setup I want. This shot, you should be proud of, your subject is clear and spot on focally and it has been captured in a classic pose too. I personally wouldn't dain to fault it.

Excellent shot!

Hello again Karen

I have been considering the backround issue you that you mention in your write up and have come up with the posted mod!

Using CS4 added a Hue and Saturation Layer and desaturated the image and lightened the Reds, Orange, Yellow and Greens. I then used the pen tool to select the body of the subject (not the wings) and increased the afore mentioned colours back to their normal state.
After that a Gaussian Blur layer was added and a Motion Blur layer and both were lightened and graduated.

Thank you everyone!

A special thank you to Andy (a brilliant Mod - I did try to 'faff' around, but with no success). Also to Bun, thank you so much for the User Award - I am really chuffed! Grin
