I don't usually have a lens flare problem with this kind of thing. The ponies have a thick winter coat, and you don't need to shoot directly in sun to get this effect on the fringe. The lens may make a differecne though.
I was actually trying to include the cloud of hot vapour as she breathed out, which has mainly wound up as a ball of light between the front feet.

Digital - its really a colour picture - that seems to be almost standard now. I scan b&w negs as colour also - there is a lot more control over the end result then. i.e. the file is RGB rather than greyscale.
