How can an image fail when it reaches the photographer in a way that is meaningful to them. I think we risk stifling our creative capacity the moment we prioritise the opinions of others above our own self evaluation. The trick perhaps is more in deciding what work to share and what to hold back for our own pleasure.

Both your's and Adam's comment have made me think about audience and what to share and when. I think this shot will be very suited for a print out and a good framing instead of just an on-line showing.
I made the comment about technique because I, for some reason, needed to emphasize that I was aware of the techniqe. But you are absolutely right. The shot stands out much better when the photographer is true to the product with no "but's".
