I agree with your comment, I had already darkened that whole section of wall as it was much brighter than the subject. However to darken any thurther was causing artifacting. The trade off from using natural light with exposure set for subjects face.

Shooting RAW will enable you to push the file harder, so you can make 2 exposures and blend them together in PS or Elements. Alternatively, try duplicating the layer with blend set to multiply and use a mask. More than happy to help with this if I can.
yeah this was a raw file but that part was fairly blown out to start with, I can darken it a bit more to be fair but at the same time it was a natural light shot and I have another version of it where I used flash so I could set the exposure of the wall seperately, they are two different looks so in this case I dont need to make the shot look like it was a flash shot. Thanks for your comment.
