Another brick on the wall

By kenraw
This is a natural light portrait of my wife taken on a little trip out on thursday for some fresh air. I used my lens wide open at 2.8 for max background blur.
Would like to thank Pulsar69 for buying me a epz subscription for my birthday today! Smile Happy new year everyone.

Lovely depth and great eye contact. My only suggestion would be to darken the upper right area, which tends to drag the viewers eye away from the subject. Has my vote.

I agree with your comment, I had already darkened that whole section of wall as it was much brighter than the subject. However to darken any thurther was causing artifacting. The trade off from using natural light with exposure set for subjects face.

Hi Ken
Shooting RAW will enable you to push the file harder, so you can make 2 exposures and blend them together in PS or Elements. Alternatively, try duplicating the layer with blend set to multiply and use a mask. More than happy to help with this if I can.

yeah this was a raw file but that part was fairly blown out to start with, I can darken it a bit more to be fair but at the same time it was a natural light shot and I have another version of it where I used flash so I could set the exposure of the wall seperately, they are two different looks so in this case I dont need to make the shot look like it was a flash shot. Thanks for your comment.

I would suggest the best thing to do is upload this again with modifications enabled and let people show you what they can do ? then take it from there if you like any of the mods ask them for advice ... I can see whats being said but can also see theres not much can be done with it ?

On looking at it further too , the point could easily be made that this is an urban portrait and to have a perfect backdrop would completely defeat the object , the painted or marked wall adds its own characteristic to the shot which could be seen either way.

Totally agree. I was merely suggesting that the brighter upper right portion was distracting.
