Green Woodpecker

By Kim Walton
Picus viridis
Common resident over much of England and Wales, especially the southern parts. Scarce and locally distributed in Scotland (which it colonised in the 1940's), and absent from Ireland.
Found in woods, farmland, parks and large gardens (where it is often seen feeding on ants in lawns), and heaths and coastal dunes.
Distinctive, large woodpecker and the only British species to show green tones. Most noted features are the red cap and often strikingly yellowish rump as the bird flies away. Has a loud, characteristic 'laughing' call.
31 - 33 cm (12”) in size.

I did miss it, but not any more! This is right up there with the best ones on EPZ. The colours are subtle, so some may have passed by the thumbnail (even I did) but do not be fooled into thinking it is not as good as ones with more votes. I especially like the way the bird is so well framed by the grasses. The the position is the head is perfect.
