Day comes to rest

By KingArthur
Took the first "roll of film" with my new Nikon D40, rather ran the D40 through its paces.

Still coming to grips with its settings and exposure system, I ventured out late last Sunday afternoon to test and perhaps bag a few worthy shots with it. Pretty much racing against time, I made use of the last fading daylight to manage a dozen or so shots.

The sun dipping low over the horizon inspired me to this pleasing composition ... with the evening glow serving as a generous backdrop, I added a touch of the Nikon's fill-in flash to illuminate these dainty backlit flowers in the hedgegrow, allowing the thistles in the immediate background fade into semi-silhouettes. The resultant frame didn't look too mean for my first serious shot with the D40, and opted to post. You will, naturally, be enjoying more shots as I explore and (hopefully) extract more of its potential in the coming days.

I hope you like the composition, viewed large if possible.

Joe

I like this a lot, Joe, what a clever idea. The gold tones blend beautifully, it's quite magical.

What's the smallest F-stop of that lens then, I thought it was F22?

Looks like a very good first upload to me, Joe. I like the warmth created by the setting sun, and the contrast between the illuminated and the silhouetted plants.
