Low Flight

By KingArthur
Although I have recently stepped into the full frame world through the D610 and D750, the Nikon D500 had for long been on my GAS (gear acquisition syndrome) radar ..... however, its exorbitant cost (locally at least) never fully justified its further consideration. This notwithstanding, during the thick of the pandemic and with prices taking a plunge, I finally decided to go for it. Naturally, when it eventually landed on my doorstep I was over the moon ..... putting it mildly.

The following weekend turned up and sure enough I headed to my favourite haunt eager to put my new toy through its paces. On the day I coupled the D500 with my "bazooka" lens (Sigma 150-600mm Contemporary) as I call it, and managed a couple of decent shots although birding activity was at a low given the sizzling fine weather during the first week of May. True to its reputation, the camera handles well and I was quite impressed with its lightning AF speed and literally endless frame bursts ..... it sure seemed to be the missing useful tool in my arsenal of cameras I kept saying to myself.

Despite the lengthy lulls, this fine male mallard eventually flew in skimming the surface of the salt-pans offering the chance of a good capture ..... once fully "locked on", the D500 worked like silk. A rapid burst, the AF retained a full lock, buffer was no issue, the end results being a joy to admire. Very very satisfied with its performance I have to admit, and it seemed to couple very well with the super zoom too. I chose to share this frame, lightly cropped which, in my opinion, demonstrates the fine performance of the machine. Viewing large should amplify this point.

Take care and stay safe,
Joe Smile
