Amsterdam, de stad waar alles kan (Amsterdam, the city were everything is possible)

By kuipje
"sung by Maggie McNeal 1980" again a Dutch song about the beauty of Amsterdam.
Amsterdam has been a Port ( a real seaport until 1932 when the Zuiderzee (now IJsselmeer) was closed.) Now it's connected with a canal (Noordzeekanaal) with the Northsea. It always was been an port even more important as the port of Rotterdam. But around 1580 the harbour became really important. Till then Antwerpen was the most important harbour, but at that time there was war with the Spaniards and the harbour was closed. Many traders move to Amsterdam. This was the beginning from what we call "The Golden Age". Half of Amsterdam were wharehouses the other half were houses of (rich) traders. More to come
As you might know Holland is the land of bikes. As Dutchman I was born with that idea.
It has been several years since I visited the centre of Amsterdam. (been many times outside the centre where my sister-in-law lives but not inthe centre) On this visit I couldnt believe my eyes, so many bikes. Bikes everywhere on the streets, more than cars. Parked everywhere were there was a bit of space. No space? Just park your bike next to an other bike. Other V s just other bikes (I love to ride my bicycle)

Are the people allowed to drink and ride?
Those bikes are an amazing sight.
Is pollution improved by less cars?
Are the people healthier?

Hi Kate
"Allowed" of course not but whos'checking it everytime.
The pollution should improve because Amsterdam has (or going to have) a strict environmental zone for everthing that has a motor. So that helps. I must say I didn't see many cars that had a problem driving in the centre, but I wasn't there with rush hour.

Excellent composition my friend. Love the all the bikes I know they drive you crazy, but much safer than all the cars we have here.

Super colours Jos, and views from Amsterdam. A really good write up too accompany your photographs

I hope they are not broken or stolen as they were in Milan. An amazing number of them everywhere. How interesting!
