The canals in Amasterdam are also known as the Venice of the North. It should be the other way around Venice= Amsterdam of the South. Because there are more canals, bridge and islands as in Venice. 90 islands, 1500 bridges and about one hundered kilometres of canals. They were used for transportation and defense.
Some grachten (canals) were made to transport special goods like goods imported for the Far East by the famous Dutch East India Company. Along those grachten where warehouses and storage buildings. A famous gracht where lots of breweries were is the Brouwersgracht, where our dear Barbara lived for several years. (Brouwerij=brewery). Once the Brouwersgracht was called the most beautiful gracht (street) by a a national newspaper. Other famous grachten are; Keizersgracht, Single (the oldest), Herengracht and Prinsengracht to name a few. When you go to Amsterdam, of course you must make a canalcruise, but take a walk through these grachten. They are more beautiful than Dam Square and the Royal Palace. Walk through the small steegjes (alleys) and sit down in the hundreds of nice cafe/bars or outside on the terraces. Drink (if you like) one of the local beers. You can always drink Heineken or Amstel at home.
Other V s other grachten
Have a good day filled with love and sunshine
