In the street where you live

By kuipje
" from the musical/film " My Fair Lady " the rol was played by Jeremy Brett but the voice yhat sung this song was Bill Shirley 1964"
This the last but one of my "Gouda" serie. These pictures are from the narrow streets of old Gouda. Since there was obviously not much space in the walled city, the houses were built close together. In those days, most homes were made of wood and straw.. It is therefore not surprising that fire broke out. In 1381 and 1438 there were major fires in Gouda with many casualties and a large portion of Gouda was destroyed. Then there was the poor sanitation, which in turn suffer so many epidemics (including cholera). The city walls were demolished in 19th century; the last gate was demolished in 1854. Partly thanks to the construction of a sewerage and water supply system was known to reduce disease at the end of the 19th century.
Other v's small streets in the old centre

Another wonderful tour - love the canal image but my goodness how accurate your parking has to be so close to the waters edge! I see parking is an issue in your lead image too!
