The streets of.... Gouda

Welcome to Gouda. The Cheese city of the world.
The pictures that I posted earlier were from the St. Janskerk in the middle of the town. Now I start right in the middle of the old town (the other V's will follow my walk from the beginning). The old townhall dates back to 1448 - 1450. One of the oldest Gothic city halls in the Netherlands.
History of Gouda. part one
Around the year 1000 the area was now Gouda is swampy and covered with a swamp forest, containing small rivers, such as the Gouwe. In the 11th and 12th centuries began with the mining of peat east and west of the city and along the banks of the Gouwe. In 1143 the name Gouda was first mentioned in a charter of the Count of Holland.
In the 13th century the river the Gouwe was connected through a canal with the Old Rhine and the estuary of the Hollandse IJssel was extended to a port. On the outskirts of town the castle of Gouda was built in the 14th century , which was to protect the port. These developments led to a route that was used for trade between Flanders and France with Holland and the Baltic region. In 1272 Count Floris V granted city rights to Gouda, which had become an important place.

you can see who I have walked (started a bit outside the city, because of the free parking)

A fascinating set, Jos, but your two ladies would not be very impressed if they knew you had been cavorting with other feathered friends Wink

It's all a bit `cheesy' to me GrinGrinGrin

I love the `greenery' that you find in the 'burbs of Dutch towns and villages Smile
