my eyes hurt me but i did not find out what was wrong Sad

my aim is to shoot an egg on white background with a feather on it which in my opinion describes nascency.

I used a 12 mm extension tube

This is an extremely difficult shot to get right. Its like taking an image of a pure white cat in a completely white room, - which I have shown in mod 2.

Everythig in the shot blens together as its all basically the same colour; so you need to shadows, which v=can be done by a strong light cominf at an agle from either side; or better still, use a brown egg, a feather with some colour, and a white background.

The mod1 is where I artificially created a wider tinal range by "painting" in dark and light areas, as if you created shadows with light.

A good first effort, not get some brown eggs!

As Wiilie says, white cat in white room... The only way to convey form for a white subject is in grey shading, the problem is that grey is, well, grey.

This is adventurous, and the exercise has partly succeeded. The egg I think works well, there's just enough shadow to mould the curve. Less successful on the feather, that's where angled light was needed.

The high ISO is also against you, where a fine texture is needed for an ethereal, light-as-air feel, this looks grainy. This did need a tripod for lower ISO!

I decided to try Nik Silver Efex pre-sets to see what they did. The modification uses number 16, Full dynamic (smooth) , with an additional tweak in Levels afterwards.

As you raise the ISO, you lose dynamic range as well as introducing digital noise - so for a really delicate subject, lower is better.

I'd say a tripod is a must, and stopping the lens well down, so that you have no focus issues.

And, crucially, I'd use a range of shutter exposures, so that you can capture the full delicacy of tones. Somethign has gone a little awry here, as you were, at +1/3 stop, underexposing hte image, but you seem to have loss of detail in the highlights on the feather.

I'm a great fan of John Blakemore, who often used similarly restricted ranges of tones - while angled light would make a picture relatively easily, I think Blakemore would have used very soft light indeed, and might have exposed a lot of film to get the results he wanted.

The same principle as a black cat in an unlit coal cellar - virtually impossible. You cannot get white on white and a white background without some significant cross lighting and thus shadows.

In summary I have to use a low ISO, find a correct angle of a smooth light and correct the exposure.

I'll make another shot and publish it.

As a footnote, this member , while aiming for a different effect to what you have here, uploads some very interesting still life work based on simple household objects. Worth looking back through his portfolio, particularly for lighting effects used.

I thnk I may have a play with white-on-white...

That was interesting - it took a while (and longer in processing), but you can see my results HERE.

I'm now wondering if this is an area where using Curves instead of Levels would allow more finesse - thank you for setting me off on an experiment that has increased my understanding a lot!
