I like it, might not have cropped th tops of the ear tufts myself but it doesn't detract from the quality of the photo, nice work

Very good indeed, but - why have you put him on the left, looking left. This is one law of composition you should have stuck to - head to the right, looking into space on the left.

It looks like you've returned to the site after a year or so away so welcome back! Smile

This is well exposed and beautifully sharp, with a nice smooth background. For me, the only thing that doesn't work is the composition. The missing ear tips aren't a big problem but I don't see why they're not there. Cropping them to improve the eyes' position in the frame would be one thing but, here, the eyes just seem to have fallen where they've fallen — they don't seem to have been deliberately placed.

The bigger problem is that you've composed with the owl looking out of the frame. There's a natural tendency to want to follow a person or animal's eyes and, in this case, that leads the viewer straight out of the photograph. It would have been much better to compose with the owl on the right, so that its gaze would lead us through the photo instead of out of it. Sometimes, it can work for a person or animal to be looking out of the frame but, usually, that's because it creates a heightened sense of tension (what are they looking at?) which isn't appropriate here.

Overall, though, a good shot.

Yes, welcome back, Leon

I agree with the other comments that this is a good shot. A portrait format might have been better to get the ear tufts in. I think this is an eagle owl and the ear tufts are a defining characteristic of this bird.

Best wishes

I agree with all the above - amazing sharpness, brilliant eyes and fantastic colours. I have no problem with the ears being missed off because they almost seem to fluffily blurr out at the top and I like that. It adds the cute factor to what is otherwise a very 'serious' owl

I'd have stuck to the bird looking into centre of picture rule but appreciate it doesn't always work like that when you're out and about! Could you try a square crop to make the owl the very centre of the image? Make sure all of his/her head is in the image but losing a tiny bit of shoulder could just tip the balance and make it a real corker.

Overall though, I'm very impressed and can only look up to skill like yours Smile
