However, the dreamy effect you seek has, to my eye, been at the expense of the image as a whole. Have you considered gradating the blur as the eye travels into the picture - just to get a 3-D effect?
The mod I have posted gives an idea of what I mean. Created a layer with quite a heavy blur. Created a mask and painted out the blur starting at 75% opacity of the paintbrush for the foreground, gradating the opacity as the eye travelled further into the frame.
