60009 'Union of South Africa'

By limmy62
Thought it was time to 'don' my anorak again.... this time for a loco hauled steam special from Birmingham to York with loco 60009, 'Union of South Africa'..a sister loco to the world famous 'Mallard', which held the world speed record of 126.4 mph for a steam hauled train. This was photographed in December 2005 on the Erewash Valley Line at Stanton Gate.

If you have time please view LARGE

Thanks for passing by and viewing

This is a great picture of an A4, particularly the steam whiskers on each side of the chimney from the whistle.

Nice one Roger, love the detail in the smoke. A bit dark at the front of the loco, suggest a bit of d&b or shadows & highlights adjust in PS.

I love the way the light has highlighted the steam clouds, and the rails.

I would definately not normally look at this sort of shot - always prefer ones with people in! But this is great made me stop and look, love the light on the steam. Thanks

Great detail in the steam ..... think you could make the image stronger by cropping away all of the blue sky.

This is SO good, it deserves the highlights treatment on the front of the engine, to make it perfect.

A great shot of "No 9". When she was given a heavy overhaul at Bridgnorth ready for the Forth Bridge anniversary in 1990, the lads reckoned that , once run in, she could have equalled, if not beaten, Mallards' record due to the fact that she was overhauled to Swindon tolerances which were tighter then Doncasters. Plus the fact that the lubrication problem to the middle big end had been cured by Townsend, who was shed master at Top shed (Kings cross) back in the fifties. Oh, and Mallard HOLDS the record, it has never been beaten.
