Les Demoiselles Coiffees

By livinglevels
Les Demoiselles Coiffees - these bizarre landscape features are formed from the the erosion of 100,000 year old boulder clay. These ones were high up on the shore of the Lac du Serre-poncon, between between Savines and Le Sauze du Lac.

Some of the shapes are quite peculiar and are usually caused by a cap of rock (the boulder in the clay) protecting the clay immediately under neath.

The column on the right in this image is capped by a boulder that is larger than a small house.

Occasionally as the erosion proceeds, the cap will fall.................
