The Sting

By ltj22
Here is a closeup of a wasp feeding on a windfall apple. I made an extention tube from a bit of pipe a body cap and some duck tape and fitted it to an old Pentax 1.8 lens this was then fitted to my Canon 450d, I was amazed at the detail, you can even see three little buttons on top of it's head, don't know what they are for do you?

They are simple eyes called ocelli.

" In addition to their compound eyes, wasps also have several simple eyes known as ocelli. These are typically arranged in a triangular formation just forward of an area of the head known as the vertex."

I think they act as light meters.

If you have captured the simple eyes in a bee or a wasp, then you know you have got a really good macro shot.

Brilliant close-up great detail. Could they be the "on" "of" and "stand by" switches?
