Pompey Revisited

By LynneJoyce
At Lillian's request, 15 images from the day we spent together in Portsmouth. OK so V1 is a cliché but it is the icon that represents Portsmouth and I have taken a different angle on it. We actually went up it and took photographs from the tower (V's 4, 12 & 15) and while Lillian was trying desperately to get images without reflections in the glass, I was trying desperately to get images that included those reflections. Thats why I am inordinately pleased with V4.

I have tried to include some interesting juxtapositions in V's 2, 7, 10, 11 13 & 14, and some of my favourite features in other versions. It will be obvious from this set that I love Portsmouth to bits and that Lillian and I had a wonderful day traversing the city and snapping all that interested us.

I will post many more images from this gorgeous city, including a few shots of the fantastical, costume drama wedding that we stumbled across. I say a few because I had to act as decoy/distraction for Lillian so that she could get shots of the more bizarrely costumed guests - I look forward to seeing those shots Lillian.

Anyway, thank you for looking and I hope you like some of them.

'Tis strange, Lynne, but having lived in Southampton from '62 to '85, Portsmouth at that time was always considered a shabby, partially ugly city compared to Soton which had been extensively rebuilt after the war and was cleaner, more open, more spacious than Pompey. What Pompey did have though, was the naval tradition. Soton had no tradition. Nowadays, Pompey is a cleaner, more pleasant and more modern city, as these images show. Apart from Sue118's images from Soton Common, I have no idea how Soton is today.

A mammoth set of images Lynn, each crammed with many unique qualities, and each with a story to tell. My particular favourite being the Naval Barracks in image number 13, as they look very similar to those of Chatham and I am sure many others.

And there was me stuck inside the hotel working. At least that didn't give me blisters! But it was clear when you both returned what a fun time you'd had!

V4 for me. The reflections give the view a context that makes it really appealing.

V4 has it.. I agree, the figures in the sky are fantastic Smile
v1 is also very good.
Your image of the spinnaker is wonderful Lynne, the blue backdrop gives the sail even more power and the diagonal is very special indeed. V9 is a lovely observation shot too, a unique bench.

They are fabulous Lynne and I can see why you're so pleased with v4! I also like v9 and v11. It's a trip down memory lane for me as I grew up in Southampton, but I can't remember one thing about Portsmouth Sad.... well, it was quite a few years ago. Smile

A lovely collection of images from this location, Lynne - it was back in 1997 was I was last there, on holiday in Sandown, IOW, and the tower wasn't there then. Agree about the reflections in V4, which add to the shot, being a plain sky. Look forward to seeing more! Wink

What a terrific set Lynne. V1 is my favourite for the angle and detail, but I also liked V7 for the juxtaposition of the lamppost reflecting the shape of the tower.

We travelled down to Portsmouth in the eighties for a wedding Lynne. The wedding was rubbish but I have fond memories of going into an Indian restaurant and having the best Indian meal I have ever tasted.Off course this was the days before they had the tower but they had that big ship that some geezer won a battle in many years ago.We could not get on to it as the queue was too big so we went to some pub instead. The wedding we were at was some girl my wife knew at work and she met the guy in Edinburgh, packed up work, and moved down to Portsmouth with him.Always kinda knew we were just invited to the wedding to make up the numbers but the prospect of a few days ''holiday'' there was OK with us.I knew things were not going to go down too well as soon as we arrived at their house on the Friday night. It turned out the guy was built like that proverbial brick building. He was one of these body builders and no sooner when we arrived we were subjected to videos of him at all his competitions. It is not really my thing watching guys all oiled up and fake tanned flexing their muscles.Still,I did like Portsmouth, even though it was a long way for me to travel to get a decent Indian meal !!

A beautiful set, the colour and light are superb.. The photos on the sea are really excellent.. I only took sea photos once early last year in Weymouth ( or the year before, can't rememberGrin), but most of them were not good..V1 is a smart shot, I like the angle the blue sky as the background is very good for the white building, made an excellent colour contrast ; I especially like V4. I like you put the people on the top, looks like people over looking the sea from the sky.. take the imagination further.. a very creative view. V9's colour and frame are perfect match enhance the whole beauty of the image..Love the shadows...
