Catherine the Great

By mac
This is from the “Russia, Royalty & the Romanov’s Exhibition” at the Queen’s Gallery, Edinburgh. I forgot to note down the title (Busy taking photographs) but I believe it is Ekaterina Dashkova (Leo could maybe correct me!) I have also included the colour version for you to decide. Thanks for looking and hopefully commentating.
Update: I have found this image on the Internet and it is "Catherine the Great" and was by Alexei Petrovich Antropov. Thanks to Moira & Leo for correcting my mistake

That looks like Ekaterina Alekseyevna - Catherine the Great. It's definitely the Russian Imperial State Crown she's wearing, which was made for her, and she was the last female ruler of Russia so the only woman to wear it.
I prefer the equestrian portrait of her, in full military kit including the trousers. She was one helluva strong woman!

You could get a whole boy scout troop camping in that tent she's wearing.
How wide were the doors in the palace?

Mono for me. The colour version is in stark contrast and makes your eyes jump from one candelabra to the other. The mono lead image allows you to concentrate on the painting. You did well to get such clarity as there are usually stray reflections from the room lighting.
That sure is one hell of a dress.......

i hate to say this but there has been some confusion ... the dame who appears in this painting is not Ekaterina Dashkova but Catherine II (1729-96), Empress of Russia c.1765
p.s. apart from that, a fine set and i like both versions
