Queen Victoria’s Golden Jubilee

By mac
This is from the “Russia, Royalty & the Romanov’s Exhibition” at the Queen’s Gallery, Edinburgh and I got the facts correct this time. The gentleman is admiring the painting of Queen Victoria’s family celebrating her Golden Jubilee (20 June 1887). Also included in colour plus the painting he is viewing.

Queen Victoria is sitting in the Green Drawing Room at Windsor Castle, surrounded by members of her family. On the mantelpiece is a bronze bust of Prince Albert. Queen Victoria commissioned the painting to commemorate the gathering of her family for the Golden Jubilee, celebrating 50 years of her reign.
The Queen noted that the composition was ‘not to be stiff & according to Etiquette, but prettily grouped’. Tuxen encountered certain difficulties when planning the group – the Princess of Wales, who did not wish to speak German, refused to be placed next to the Crown Prince, and the Duke of Connaught said he would rather be left out altogether than put near the Battenburgs. Some of the sitters gave the artist photographs to work from, but the shapes of some of the female clients had been airbrushed Signed and dated: L Tuxen 1887.
The group contains practically all the crowned heads of Europe as most are related to Victoria’s extended family. I believe the one in the highland dress is Czar Nicholas II (who died 7 July 1918) standing in front of his father Alexander III and Empress Maria Feodorovna.

A logistical nightmare for the poor painter!
Just as well Philip wasn't there to say "How bloody difficult is it? Just paint the f****** picture, man!"
