Rejoneador

By mac
Rejoneador is the name given to a bullfighter who fights the bull on horseback. The rejoneador shouldn't be confused with the picador, who is just an assistant of the matador. The rejoneo is a form of bullfighting in Portugal and in Spanish bullfighting. The idea is to weaken the bull before the matador takes over. It involves very skilful horse riding.
I do not condone this but was invited to attend a bullfight in Barcelona and as I had my camera with me the temptation was too much so took a few pictures. This was photographed in 1973 on Kodachrome transparency film and scanned to digital format. I believe now that bullfighting is not so popular in Spain.
Please judge it on the photograph rather than the cruelty of the sport. I keep using “sport” but cannot think of another word to use!

Ole, ole!
Is this a proper 3:2 film frame?
It looks cropped to me -
(No problemo with that).
If we consider that the given transparency film (and quite unforgiving) is only 64ASA and notice the freezing of the actions and the motions this frame is a strike of genius!

Great action and shadow Ian. “Sport”- it is not and this image highlights the cruelty involved.

How about the word 'spectacle'?

I think it would be interesting to know if anyone has done serious work on the psychology of this sort of thing - another term (courtesy of a friend who is involved in kinky photography) is 'non-consensual sadism'.

I recognise the difficult decision that you had to make, Ian, and I endorse your shooting, and then posting. If we don't ever see it, we can pretend it's not there.

The Snowflake society might one day take the Spanish government to task on this. Personally think it's cruel, but like fox hunting, there was always an original purpose...we are perhaps a little wider now?

Great photography 😁
