School of Divinity, Edinburgh

By mac
New College sits in the heart of Edinburgh, a world-class university. It is located at the top of The Mound, close to Edinburgh Castle, the National Gallery, Princes Street and Waverley Station, and a few minutes' walk from other University buildings and the main University library.
Theology has been taught at the University of Edinburgh since its foundation in 1583. New College was established in 1843 and became part of the University of Edinburgh - merging with the Faculty of Divinity - in 1935.
The stature is of John Knox. He was a Scottish minister, theologian, and writer who was a leader of the country's Reformation. He is the founder of the Presbyterian Church of Scotland. Born: about 1513, Haddington, Scotland. Died:24 November 1572 (aged 58 or 59), Edinburgh, Scotland

Wonderful set. I think I prefer the mono versions. Colour seems superfluous here.

Thanks for posting all these versions. For me I believe you have chosen the right image as your lead. This mono shot is fabulous. This is the first time I have seen a representation of John Knox who was one of the leading fathers of the Reformation. Men like Knox were very bold in their day. The churches for a long time held services in Latin, so that the ordinary man and woman coming hadn't a clue of what was going on. Knox, besides others, discovered what was in the Bible, the need for men and women to see they were in great need of the forgiveness of their sins from Jesus Christ and were determined to tell others of this in their native tongues. Many who did this paid severely for what they did.

A truly magnificent b&w, Ian. I rather like V5, too, but that lead image dominates; colour is too kind to John Knox although his character was colourful indeed. In particular I appreciate the stiff upright march of the passer-by, determined to avoid the gaze of your lens (and perhaps the admonishments of Knox!); his position is perfect.

As we tend to frequent the Mound when in Edinburgh, how on earth have I managed to miss this building?

Regards
Bill
