Mesquite dunes, California

By maggietear
I would love to be able to photograph these amazing dunes in winter light, but we were there in April! It's an amazing place, in the spectacular Death Valley! The light was quite harsh, early morning would have been better. The hottest recorded temp is around 130 degrees F; the locals were saying that some people go in the summer just to experience that level of heat!

Mesquite can certainly take the heat - we have it growing all over the area where I live. We've not had temps as high as 130F, but we hit 110F this summer.

You can almost feel the heat looking at this. Elegant shot - the blue of the mountains creates a good depth.

So alone. What a harsh environment and such a little tree. Superb landscape, with a hint of human visitation by way of the footprints.

Life clinging o in adverse circumstances, one of my favourite subjects.
The tree gives a tantalising hint of shade...
Great shot how does that tree survive in that heat and sand.

The much sought after lone tree in a spectacular setting! Great image.
I love the fragile little tree, I'd have liked if you had bent a little and cleared the tree from the hills in the BG, it would look cleaner for me Maggie.

Great capture.

a desert classic... the footprints are a pain at times but here they actually add another dimension.

Amazing image, well balanced, I like the tree in the sand and how your shot takes you forward as far as the eye can see... Grin
