I really like this. Though tighter framing would be an obvious thing to try, it would remove the sense of space, an empty beach and sky. It's often important with a shot of a figure standing in water that you include the area where the feet are, even though they're not visible - somehow the human mind wants the space for completion...

The timing is perfect - at the same time, this is what it says on the box, a family snap of a dad and son having fun: but the boy's pose is thoroughly static, as though he's sitting on a stone on the beach. It's slightly surreal.

The horizon is perfectly level: it seems a small thing, but the slightest tilt would ruin the whole shot.

This is a family snap plus some! In the main gallery it would do well, garnering votes and possibly awards. It combines excellent technique with perfect timing - plus that serendipity element, *chance and luck. The child is caught in tidy, formal profile, he seems to be sitting in air, surveying the world, considering what to do next. It could be a metaphor for childhood...

Like John I wondered about crop, I came to a different conclusion. Landscape format gives that sense of space, but it leads the eye to explore horizontally, and to expect a horizontal direction of action. Jumping forward. Ian's mod is interesting because the portrait crop emphasizes upward motion. I went for square because of its ambiguity, it doesn't direct the eye. So it leaves the child free to decide on his next move.

Does that make sense of is it completely bonkers??

mrswoolybill. It is not bonkers at all. I like both mods square and portrait.

This is brilliant, Marius, full of fun and so beautifully captured, with the actiion well focused and frozen. Your timing was perfect to get the child in that "seated" position.
Both subjects are laughing and enjoying the experience, and the orange arm bands lift the image somewhat because the rest is mostly tones of blue.
I also like the way the child is completely set against the plain blue sky.

In an ideal world, the man would be facing the other way, into the light, or the light would be coming in from the right, but the shadows indicate a bright and sunny environment, enhancing the happy-go-lucky atmosphere.

I like this a lot. Several orders of magnitude above normal family stuff. I would sell. I would leave it as it is - the crops are OK but no better than your original.

Good stuff.
