Kimmeridge Bay

By Matman

I would have liked the sun breaking through the clouds to have been on the right hand side to balance the image a bit more. This was taken at f16 for .6 of a second. Any help would be great but would be interested in any comment about sharpness. I see some amazingly sharp images on this site and it seems beyond me.

The image looks very good to me, and plenty sharp enough. You've held back the sun well and also exposed the rocks nice and bright, with lots of detail.
Not sure if this is any help, but I click on a lot of cracking seascapes and know what you mean about "amazingly sharp images". Check how many are taken with a canon 5d and 17-40L. I can't see myself buying canon with so much invested in nikon, but I do sometimes wonder if full-frame is the future!!

Obviously a full frame sensor and expensive lenses will give you a considerable headstart but a lot of the "pin-sharp" images you see on the site are not necessarily due to the camera alone. The correct use of sharpening (and contrast) in post processing via software is a skill in itself. With this particular shot, personally, I would have sharpened the foreground rocks and used a layer mask to exclude the water and sky.

This is a really great shot, it has all the elements coming togeather for a really moody seascape. One to be proud of. Uploaded a mod and personalised it a bit to suit me if it was mine. Tried a little usm in the fg to see if it made any difference to your sharpness, although in your image It looks sharp enough to me. If I wanted to be picky the sky is a little blown but it does not detract from the image overall.Excellent work

I think the sharpness thing is a personal call. For myself sharpness is not usually a major issue and I think your image is plenty sharp enough. I like how you have framed the foreground with the rocks which leads the eye out into the photo. Well done!

Hi All,

I am a newbie on this site (joined this year) and I must say that the way that so many people get involved so quickly has blown me away!...Smile. What a great site this is! Thanks for all your comments...
Mike, I notice you get to Kimmeridge and Chapmans as well. I expect we will bump into eachother one of these days...Smile I will put a meet request into the forums every now and again.
Andy, good points about PP, I have a lot to learn in that area.
Colin thanks for taking the time to modify. I would like to see it larger to make the most of your changes.
Catherine, I agree with you, it is just that when you are very close in to foreground stuff I love the pin sharpness of the images I have seen here.

Thanks again

Hi Matt thanks for your comments on my portfolio. Your photos are very good from what ive seen so far. I did a mod on this showing the main PP i normally do. Forgot to write in the mod description that i did a little dodging of the highlights and burning of the shadows too.

Hope you like it Smile

PS was gonna send you a private message about my PP work but i cant see the option on your page for some reason.

I think the mods say it all. Welcome to epz and I expect we'll meet if you're a Dorset regular there are often meets in the area.

Hi Penny,

Thanks for the welcome. there does look like there is quite a big bunch around the Dorset area (I live in Dorset). I will definitely keep an eye on the 'meets' forum.
