I really like the lighting, very warm colors and a nice composition. But must confess that I'm bothered by the centeredness. IMO, this would be stronger with a crop from the left. Congrats on a fine image.

Well put together and thought out. Maybe crop a bit tighter, might give a bit more impact.

Just the result of a bit of experimentation on an idle Saturday afternoon.

The thing about this shot that I really like is the simplicity. The space around it doesn't bother me because you are naturally drawn to the piece. Having a tight crop on this tends to lose the impact rather than enhance it. It's also inspired me to do some shots in a similar style which is another reason why I've picked it to be the photo of the week.

Such a good shot! Maybe you should write an article for the site on how you did it.

And I only bought a glass chess set and coloured LEDs the weekend before last in order to try this sort of thing! I just hope that my attempt comes even close to half of the effectiveness of this one. I like the space around it.

I take it that you did this with the torch directly overhead, pointing down? My plan is to put the LED blutacked under the glass board and remove the felt patch at the bottom of the piece - did you try that and if so, any tips?

Wow, all these expensive flash guns and you used a flashlight to produce a great photograph. Excellent job.

Obviously a great shot. I had just read about using small flashlight to illuminate subjects, but had not tried it yet. Now I am afraid I could not equal your image. (But I will try.) I'll look for more of your work.

I did mine almost a year ago - it's in my portfolio.
Maybe it would be nice to be able to see some of the board - use a light with a slightly wider beam.
Congrats by the way - mine didn't get this recognition. Mind you, there wasn't an editors choice then...
Thanks for all the positive responses.

fantastic idea. I'm drawn here by the equally fantastic copy version of your photo which is doing the rounds at the moment. I love the copy (although it was rather easier to achieve given that thinking up the idea was not required), but the original deserves credit for inspiring others.
