Life in the tannery

By MattyEdwards
Hey All

This was taken around mid day in at the main tannery in the Medina in Fez, Morocco. Although not as hot as Mid summer it was still around 32 degrees and the smell was unbearable, well at least for myself who is fortunate enough to not have to work in these conditions. A real shock to the senses when in reality it is just another day in Medina living.

Thanks for taking the time to look

This is a wonderfully evocative shot Matty. Something you see on BBC documentaries a lot, or National Geo etc. The story is there laid before you, the senses (if you know the background on these places, which I sort of do) are aroused simply by the image and it's brilliantly seen and composed. Superb documentary work here Matty, very good indeed!

Thank you very much Jonny. It really is an amazing place, such a contrast to what I am used to. I have been to Morocco before, but the Medina at Fez was a first and it is so interesting. And the thing is, it was 70 for 2 return tickets (Allbeit with ryanair and you wonder whether walking would be a better option)

Thanks again chap

Jealous! But for that price I might go myself! lol! My cousin is going in a couple of weeks time and he has been asking me a lot about camera stuff and preparation as he knows I have been to North Africa before. I said he should be just be prepared to have his head scrambled by the culture shock and go with the flow! It's very memorable! He is also trading in his 40D for a brand new 60D and a 24-70 to go there and capture the place lol! He is also very good at this kind of thing. Has a degree in photography, specialising in architectural stuff and I am looking forward to seeing stuff like this from well as more from you Wink Keep 'em coming! Smile

Likewise I remember the smell. Weren't you given a sprig of mint to scrunch under your nose! I also remember the camels' heads for sale in the souk. Lots of memorable images. You have caught this one nicely.

Lovely composition, great lighting - altogether a very nice image
