"African Elephant"

By RonnieAG
Pamela {pamelajean} is the only one to have guessed correctly..........an elephant was being sculpted.........in Sculptor at Work you could see the dome of it's head.
I know that Graham {digital_boi} knew the answer but he was good enough not to give the game away.
Here are 3 images of it at a later stage of it's build, and build does seem the appropriate word as it built up from many different sections.........each ear alone is made up from 3 sections.
The 4th. image is of the sculptor himself.
No nails have been used, only wooden dowels.
Sculpted in oak, the African Elephant is the work of chainsaw sculptor Robert Coia and it is the first link in a chain of 11 works that he hopes will connect Glasgow pupils to the City's parks, and to be part of the legacy of next year's Commonwealth Games.
The wood used is only from wind blown trees that came down in the Park (Pollok Country Park) in a storm 18 months ago.
The elephant has now been sited within Pollok Country Park and at some time in the future I shall show where.
If any are interested in obtaining more info about Robert Coia and his work, just Google "Jumbo Carving for Glasgow Commonwealth Games".

V 1: nearing completion.
V 2: coats of teak oil have been applied.
V 3: log in situ.
V 4: the sculptor, Robert Coia, covered in wood dust and with his pot of teak oil in hand.

Colour variations are due the images being taken over a number of days, at different times of day and under varying light conditions, and in V 2 and 3 teak oil having been applied.

My thanks to all who commented on Sculptor at Work.

Ronnie.

You wouldn't see many real Elephants in the park..............I would of thought a better sculpture would of been something that is wholly Scottish, something that defines Scotland.............but there you go who am I to decide..............GrinGrinGrinGrin

Thankyou, Ronnie, I await my prize with eagernessGrinGrin!
This series of images is absolutely fascinating, and the fact that you were able to capture the different stages of the sculpting of the elephant is rewarding, not only for you, but also for us on EPZ.
He is a very talented artist whose work deserves acclaim, so natural, so enormous, and so beautifully crafted.
When I saw the sweep of the trunk, I wasn't sure why it was done like that, then I saw the log added, and it all made sense.
I use teak oil on my wooden garden ornaments, glad I'm doing something rightTongue!
